One man died and another was injured today in separate surfing incidents on the North Shore. At about 9:50 a.m., lifeguards, surfers, and photographers rescued a 26-year-old man who was injured while surfing at the surf spot Backdoor and brought him to shore, said Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright. Multiple surf publications identified the man as professional surfer Dusty Payne of Maui. Payne was initially unconscious but regained consciousness under the care of lifeguards. He sustained multiple injuries. Emergency Medical Services personnel took over care and transported him to a hospital in serious condition. At about 11:45 a.m., surfers brought an unresponsive surfer to shore from the surf spot Rocky Point. Lifeguards performed CPR on the surfer until EMS personnel took over. EMS pronounced the man, who appeared to be in his 50s, dead at the scene.   News Story  via     Share this: Like...

Julian Wilson Preparing For 2016 World Surf League Title

Posted by on Feb 20, 2016 in Spinksy's Blog, Surfing, Surfing News, WSL WCT | 1 comment

COOLUM Beach’s Julian Wilson came close to winning the world title last season. This time around, he’s intent on making it happen. The 27-year-old will next month start his 2016 Championship Tour campaign on the Gold Coast. Bolstered by a refreshing off-season at home with family, he is eager to build on a career-best effort in 2015, when he finished sixth overall after bowing out of title contention in the last event of the season. “That (winning the world crown) is what I’m aiming for, 100%,” he said. “I’ll take what I learned from last year and every other year I’ve been on tour and will try and have a stronger, better year.” “Last year had some great moments. I’ll try and have more of those this year and put myself into a stronger position coming into (season-ending) Pipe (Masters).” Now in his sixth season, the natural footer says he is “ready for the unexpected”. “It’s surfing, an ever-changing environment we’re competing in. You never know what’s around the corner.” Midway through last season, Wilson was certainly caught by surprise in the waters of Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. It was there, in a two-man final, that Gold Coast’s Mick Fanning encountered a shark. Wilson paddled towards his mate to help, despite the danger. It was a harrowing experience, streamed live online. “I really wasn’t prepared for something like that to happen and it (also) came with a lot of (post-event) attention,” he said. “It was a bit difficult to process and get my head around it. I probably struggled to find the same form after that. It was a learning experience.” Wilson will this year welcome the assistance of ex-world tour surfer Jake Paterson. It’s hoped the presence of the Western Australian can provide Wilson with a winning edge. “In years prior I haven’t really had that (type of support) so I will have somebody I will be consistently travelling with and working with. I think it’s what I’m looking for,” he said. “Jake is a man with a lot of experience. He is well travelled, had a great career and he has a lot of knowledge to bounce off at events.” Like Wilson, Paterson is a former winner at Pipeline. He is renowned for his big wave prowess and was a top-five surfer on tour. The 32-year-old was also a straight-talking announcer on tour webcasts. Wilson was scheduled to compete in his first event of the year, a Qualifying Series competition at Merewether, next week. But yesterday he withdrew from the 6000-point event. His manager and brother Bart said he will instead continue training on the Sunshine Coast. “He is having a great pre-season and with more waves on the way for the south-east he’s got the perfect preparation right on his doorstep,” Bart said. However, a handful of fellow Sunshine Coasters will compete at Newcastle. Source...

Damien Hobgood Puts on a Barrel-Riding Clinic in Indonesia

Posted by on Nov 15, 2015 in News, Spinksy's Blog, Surfing, Surfing News | 0 comments

Contrary to popular belief, our favorite identical twins are not Mary-Kate and Ashley. It’s not Kelly Slater and Vin Diesel, either. Our favorite twins are none other than Damien and CJ Hobgood. And while CJ is finishing his last year on tour, his bro Damien was out in Indonesia putting on a tube-riding clinic for all the young grommets. Aside from the fascinating surfing that is Damien Hobgood, the commentary from his unofficial students was a breath of fresh air. Their tone was nothing short of reverent, as each and every surfer spoke to the tremendous amount of respect they have for Damien, both for his surfing and his status as a role model. Join the little groms and take a few notes for yourself. “`` ``“ Share this: Like...

Kelly Slater’s Air… Was it a ’10’ ?

Posted by on Sep 13, 2015 in Spinksy's Blog, Surfing, Surfing News, WSL WCT | 0 comments

Kelly Slater has once again shown why he’s the greatest surfer ever, producing a mind-blowing aerial move against Mick Fanning at the Hurley Pro, in California. Surfing on his backhand, the 11-time world champion launched himself into the air, spinning 360 degrees and becoming detached from his board at one point before landing in the whitewash and emerging to finish the wave. Yet, amazingly the 43-year-old was scored just 4.17 after the judges ruled the move incomplete because he failed to land on his feet, despite climbing from his stomach to stand-up and ride out. Slater reached into his bag of tricks to pull the never-before-seen manoeuvre on his second wave during a round five elimination heat against Fanning. The move thrilled the large crowd at Trestles and left the commentators raving, but somehow failed to impress the five judges with the wave failing to count among his top two rides. Many fans felt the move deserved a 10. The low score proved the difference in the heat with Fanning emerging victorious 16.10 to 14.90 and ended any slim hope Slater had of mounting a charge on the world title race. The win put three-time world champion Fanning into the quarter finals against compatriot Adrian Buchan, while 2012 world champion Joel Parkinson also progressed to the last eight against Brazilian Felipe Toledo.   Share this: Like...
