Remembering Dane’s 2012 Quiky Pro France Final

Posted by on Oct 3, 2016 in Spinksy's Blog, Surfing | 0 comments

The 2016 Quiksilver Pro France is just days away. And while a room full of mathematicians in a nondescript location is working tirelessly to determine the different scenarios that would result in John John clinching it early, Medina swooping the yellow jersey, or Kelly’s number 12 mic drop, it’s easy to fall into the trap of looking past this event. Indeed, the Pipe Masters always seems to take away the flash, bang, and pow from the European leg of the tour. Still, France has always been my favorite contest. It has a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it equal parts exhilarating and unpredictable. Maybe it’s the time change between Hossegor and California, the late night weariness come heat 3 or 4 in each round that makes it seem extra interesting. But watching replays at more reasonable hours in the day, I seem to come to the same conclusions. Maybe I’m a Francophile at heart. The thought of packing tubes in the morning and a warm baguette and a café du lait in the afternoon certainly sounds charming. Still, focusing on the waves and surfing alone, exciting things have occurred in France over the years. As evidence, I present to you perhaps the most interesting in recent memory: Dane Reynolds making the final as a wildcard (with thumping tubes to boot!). The forecast for the wait period looks promising so far. Here’s to hoping for a similar level of thrill to unfold come October 4th! Contributor Dylan Heyden The Inertia Associate Editor Share this: Like...

This is a Slab You Could ACTUALLY Surf

The internet world is full of  people surfing insane waves. Big, dangerous, slabbing death-waves.  Not all of them, though. This one, in particular, looks like a playful little tube machine. The RVCA team, including Ellis Ericson, Beau Foster, and Sam Wrench found it Australia’s southeastern coastline and made the most of it   Share this: Like...

Occy Interviews Kelly in Tahiti

Posted by on Aug 27, 2016 in Podcast, Spinksy's Blog, Surfing | 0 comments

Kelly Slater is always a great interview, whether it’s on the booth at a WSL event or to a local newspaper reporter after a heat win at Lowers. Enter the always affable, quirky Mark Occilupo — who’s just started his new ’Occ-Cast’, and happened to be on hand in Tahiti the day before Kelly won the Billabong Pro — and what follows is 40 minutes of sheer listening enjoyment. Here’s a sample about the fact that Kelly hadn’t surfed hardly at all between J-Bay and Teahupoo. Occ mentions that this is pretty common and asks why. Kelly’s response: “For whatever reason, if I’m not motivated, I’ll just save it till I get a heat and it wakes me up. I don’t think you can pull that off at a wave where it’s about maneuvers and flow — I think you have to be on your game for airs and turns and timing and everything’s perfect. “But in barrels, it’s like riding a bike. It’s more about reading the lineup than it is about the surfing. When it comes to barrel riding, it’s about small, technical things in the barrel and how greedy you want to get and how deep you wanna get in the tube. But that’s second nature.”   Share this: Like...
